Kremlin keeps its cool: Russian rally for jailed activist ends peacefully

Hundreds gathered in central Moscow today for an unauthorized rally to demand freedom for jailed activist Sergei Udaltsov. Despite a heavy police presence, it unfolded without incident.?

Hundreds of Russians gathered on Moscow's central Pushkin Square Thursday evening to demand freedom for Sergei Udaltsov and other "political prisoners" being held by authorities for protesting against allegedly fraudulent parliamentary elections.

They managed to avoid a crackdown by ranks of heavily-armored riot police by keeping the event within the confines of a permitted "meeting with Duma deputies" and eschewing the open slogans and banners that would make it a forbidden "protest rally."

The main reason for the meeting was the continuous detention of Mr. Udaltsov, a left-wing street organizer who has been re-arrested three times since being picked up for "jaywalking"?in Moscow on election day almost a month ago.

Over 2,000 people signed a Facebook pledge to attend the meeting but only a few hundred braved the freezing temperatures, massed police, and an explicit warning from Moscow authorities that the rally had been banned.

"We do not want to commit any illegal actions, but authorities didn't allow us to discuss this issue in public, either in the form of a rally or in the form of a picket," says Ilya Ponomaryov, a Duma deputy with the left-wing A Just Russia party and one of the organizers.?"So we have chosen to go with the format of public meeting with Duma deputies, because under the law this format doesn't require explicit permission from the authorities."

Mr. Ponomaryov and Communist Party deputies Alexander Yuschchenko and Oleg Smolin?presided over the tense gathering, under the stares of massed police. They eventually opened the floor to other participants to address the crowd.?Some say they fear for the life of Udaltsov, who staged a hunger strike to protest his pre-emptive arrest and has been hospitalized under heavy police guard?for much of the past three weeks.

On Tuesday a Moscow judge postponed his appeal on a previous arrest, and ordered him to remain in custody for at least another 10 days.

"Udaltsov's case has nothing to do with the law. I am here to protest against this situation," says protester Natalya Chernysheva. "I feel as if the same thing could happen to any of us. We need to come to such meetings as long as it is still possible, in the hope that maybe things will change."

The meeting broke up peacefully after a couple of hours. Some said the fact that police did not move in to make arrests, as they often do, was a hopeful sign for the future.

"I feel that it's everyone's duty to support political prisoners," says Yana Chabovskaya, a teacher. "I don't share Udaltsov's political views, but I support his right to have them. We have to go on fighting for those rights, and if we come out in large enough numbers it will make it much more difficult for them to arrest us."

Lindsay Lohan not on board for Dubai New Year's boat bash (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Rest easy, everyone, Lindsay Lohan is not returning to her partying ways.

At least not in Dubai on New Year's Eve.

Despite earlier reports that the actress/recent Playboy cover model would be ringing in 2012 at a star-studded gala aboard the ocean liner QE2 in the United Arab Emirates city, Lohan's spokesperson says she won't be in attendance.

"At no point was Lindsay ever considering going to Dubai for New Year's Eve," the actress' representative told TheWrap.

Rumors that the "Mean Girls" star would be welcoming 2012 in Dubai began to swirl after reports emerged that Lohan would participate in a party on the QE2 -- currently docked at Dubai's Port Rashid Cruise Terminal -- that would also be attended by former "Baywatch" babe Pamela Anderson and British cricket player Allan Lamb.

TheWrap's request for comment from Anderson's representative has not yet been answered.

Lohan is so angry about the party rumors that her attorneys are preparing to issue a cease-and-desist order to the organizers of the party, TMZ reports. Lohan's representative declined to comment on any potential legal actions on the actress' part.

Earlier this week, TMZ reported that the actress, who in the past has reportedly raked in big paydays for attending parties, had shot down a number of offers to attend New Year's Eve soirees in light of her recent legal woes.

Lohan is currently working through a regimen of community service and therapy sessions, after violating her probation stemming from a DUI arrest. During a progress hearing earlier this month, Judge Stephanie Sautner praised the actress' efforts, telling her, "Miss Lohan, you have actually done your work."

6.8M iOS, Android Devices Activated on Christmas Day Says Analytics Firm

People the world over activated a record breaking 6.8 million Android and iOS devices on Christmas Day this year.

According to app analytics firm Flurry, on Christmas Day, 6.8 million iOS and Android devices were activated, more than double the 2.5 million devices that were activated last year on the same day, representing an increase of 125 per cent.

The company said that during the first 20 days of December, 1.3 million to 1.8 million Android and iOS devices were activated each day, with an average of 1.5 million devices each day. On December 25, the number increased by more than 353 per cent, reaching 6.8 million.

A high number of device would also result in record breaking app downloads. Flurry, which tracks more than 140,000 applications, said that people downloaded an average of 108 million applications every day but on Christmas Day, the number soared to 242 million, representing an increase of 125 per cent.

"Historically, more iOS and Android apps are downloaded on Christmas than on any other day of the year. This is due to a massive influx of smartphones and tablets given as gifts. As fast as loved-ones can unwrap their shiny, new Galaxy IIs, iPhones, iPads, Kindle Fires, et cetera, they start loading them up with new apps," the company said.

Rockets fired at Israel from Gaza: army

JERUSALEM, Dec 28, 2011 (AFP): Palestinian militants fired two rockets from the Gaza Strip into southern Israel late on Wednesday, causing neither casualties nor damage, the Israeli military said.

"Two rockets fired from Gaza exploded in open fields in the Eshkol region," an army spokesman told AFP, adding that there were no casualties or damage.

Earlier on Wednesday, a rocket fired from Gaza landed in the Sha'ar Hanegev region. It did not explode or cause any casualties or damage, police said.

The attacks came after two Israeli air raids on the Gaza Strip killed one Palestinian and wounded about 20 others late on Tuesday.

The Israeli army said the strikes were against "global jihad" targets in the Palestinian territory who were planning cross-border attacks from neighbouring Egypt.

China premier urges protection of farmers' rights

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has urged officials to share profits from the development of rural land with the millions of farmers who have to give it up.

Wen's speech to officials at a work conference Tuesday comes a week after southern Chinese officials gave in to protesting villagers after a two-week standoff with police over a land dispute.

He says China can no longer sacrifice farmers' land rights for the sake of reducing the cost of urbanization and industrialization.

Last Wednesday, the village of Wukan called off protests that had driven out local officials after a provincial party official agreed to release detainees and return some confiscated land to farmers.

Land disputes cause tens of thousands of protests in China every year.
