Prepare For Beautiful Summer Skin ? Beauty, Health and Fitness ...

We are heading into summer and will soon be wanting to bare beautiful, toned and gleaming skin in flirty dresses and sexy monokinis. Now is the time to pamper your skin and reverse some of the winter neglect so that your skin will be glowing in time for the summer sun.

The first step to getting summer ready skin is to exfoliate your body. Skin gets dry and dry cells accumulate during the winter months when you are all covered up. This makes skin dull and even dollops of lotion will not make it look fresh. Use a body scrub in the shower and gently rub it onto the skin in a circular motion with a sponge. Exfoliate from the shoulders to the feet and consider using a facial exfoliator for the delicate skin, neck and d?collet? area. If you want beautiful skin all year round, grab that exfoliator and use it daily.

If you have been lax about shaving during winter, now is the time to crack out a new razor and get shaving. Use a shaving lotion for a close shave and be sure to apply moisturizer after shaving to prevent itching. If you are in a pinch, your hair conditioner can be used instead of shaving cream.

Get into the summer vibe early by using a scented body lotion. Winter is all about heavy body butters but light lotions are better for summer. Choose one that can be easily absorbed ? gels and purees are great options. Coconut and mango are perfect summer scents. Apply the lotion after getting out of the shower and you will be surrounded by the smell of summer all day as the lotion seals the moisture directly into the skin.

Summer skin should be glowing but instead of lounging like a lizard in the sun, use a self tan. A sunless tanner is a good start to getting that glow and there are facial options that can be used on alternative days instead of moisturizer to get a soft tan on the face. Most facial tanners create a gradual tanning effect.

Feet are often neglected but perfect tootsies are an essential part of any summer makeover, especially when they are being displayed in strappy sandals. Treat yourself to a pedicure at a spa or do one at home. Scrub off the dry skin using a pumice stone and a tube of foot scrub in the shower a few times a week to get your feet soft and ready for summer.

Replace your sunscreen. All skincare products have a shelf life and it is better to replace the one from last year with a new one, preferably in a higher SPF. Use a shot glass amount of your body and a teaspoon sized amount on your face every day. If you have been in the sun for two hours, reapply. Sunscreen is essential in avoiding age spots and wrinkles, as well as skin cancer. Choose a product that has both UVA and UVB protection. Remember to apply a balm with sunscreen to the lips as well.

Avoid clogged pores and pimples by switching to a lighter moisturizer. The humidity in summer does no favors for the skin and the heavy formulations slathered on in winter will weigh down the skin. Swap your foundation for a mineral based powder option and use bronzing powder instead of cream based blush. Water proof mascara is a must for when you are frolicking in the pool and a lashing of tinted gloss completes any summer look.

Follow these simple and pampering steps and you will be boasting glorious summer skin in time for that rendezvous on the beach!

How Packaged Food Makes Girls Hyper

Image: Getty Images

The chemical bisphenol A, known as BPA, has become familiar in the past decade, notably to parents searching for BPA-free bottles for their infants. Animal studies have found that BPA, which resembles the sex hormone estrogen, harms health. The growing brain is an especially worrisome target: estrogen is known to be important in fetal brain development in rodents. Now a study suggests that prenatal, but not childhood, exposure to BPA is connected to anxiety, depression and difficulty controlling behaviors in three-year-olds, especially girls.

More than 90 percent of Americans have detectable amounts of BPA in their urine; for most people, the major source of exposure is diet. BPA is a component of the resins that line cans of food and the plastics in some food packaging and drink containers, and the chemical leaches into the edible contents. Other sources of BPA exposure include water-supply pipes and some paper receipts.

Epidemiologist Joe M. Braun of Harvard University and his colleagues studied 240 women and their children in the Cincinnati area. The researchers collected urine samples from the mothers twice during pregnancy and within 24 hours of birth and from the children at ages one, two and three. BPA was detectable in 97 percent of the samples. They also surveyed parents about their kids? behavior and executive functions?a term for the mental processes involved in self-control and emotional regulation.

The researchers found that the more BPA children were exposed to in the womb, the more anxious, depressed and hyperactive they were at three years old and the more difficulty they had con?trolling their emotions and inhibiting behaviors. The effects were most severe in girls. The team did not find a con?nection between the children?s behavior and their exposure to BPA after they were born, they report in the November 2011 issue of Pediatrics.

Determining the precise mechanisms behind BPA?s effect on behavior will require more work, Braun observes. BPA interferes with estrogen; in the brain, this action could affect the migration and survival of neurons, for example. ?It is fair to say there is reasonable concern over BPA toxicity,? Braun says.

Luckily, reducing dietary exposure is possible. As reported last July in Environ??mental Health Perspectives, 20 participants swapped their normal diet, which included canned and packaged foods, for a ?fresh foods? diet, which did not. The dietary switch reduced the participants? BPA levels by 66 percent after three days.

Help Protect Your Home and Business During National Flood Safety ...

NORTHBROOK, Ill., March 12, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ ?
As part of National Flood Safety Awareness Week and in advance of the spring storm season, Allstate Insurance Company reminds Americans that now is the time to prepare for floods and consider their flood insurance needs. The average flood loss cost is $48,000 for homeowners and $85,000 on commercial property according to the National Flood Insurance Program. And, according to FEMA, higher than expected drought and fire conditions increase the risk of flash floods, especially as the spring storm season approaches.

?Unfortunately, floods can happen anywhere, even in low risk flood zones. But there are a few simple things property owners can do to help prepare and protect their home and business,? said Mark Green, senior vice president, Allstate. ?Insurance coverage is critical. Some consumers mistakenly believe that flood damage is covered by most standard home, renters or commercial insurance policies. National Flood Safety Awareness Week is a reminder for everyone to talk to their local insurance agent before the spring storm season to get information about flood coverage.?

National Flood Insurance Program policies can take up to 30 days to go into effect. Contact your local Allstate agency to talk about your flood insurance needs.

The Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety offer these tips to prepare for floods.

Keep drains, gutters and downspouts clear of debris.

Prepare an evacuation plan with a kit that includes insurance documents, medications and critical items in case you need to leave your home for a few days.

Inspect sump pumps and drains regularly to ensure proper operation.

Have a licensed electrician raise electric components at least 12 inches above the expected flood levels for your area.

To prevent sewage backup, have a licensed plumber install an interior or exterior backflow valve. Make sure your yard?s grading (slope) directs water away from the building.

Have the installation of your furnace, water heater and other permanent equipment modified so that they are elevated above the expected flood levels for your area.

The tips provided here are guidelines. Please use your best judgment when evaluating your flood preparation needs. For more ways to prepare, respond and recover from a flood, visit the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety website.

Date Online ? Without Ever Going Online ? Mika Doyle

Personal Dating Agent ScreenshotThere was a time in the not-so-distant past when online dating was considered taboo. Dangerous, even. One of the most common reasons people warned against it was because you never knew who was actually on the other end of those private messages you were getting.

Nowadays that way of thinking seems antiquated; after all, we?ve all become web-savvy enough to navigate our way through what?s fake and what?s real when it comes to our online interactions, right?

Well, not if the creators of Personal Dating Agent?do their job.

Personal Dating Agent is a new online dating service based in the UK that essentially does the online dating for you. Their dating agents get to know their clients, create online profiles for them, and pose as their clients on said online dating sites. All the client has to do is show up for the date.

According to co-founder Maxime?Leufroy-Murat, the site ?is targeted to both men and women who don?t have time to go online, scramble through thousands of profiles, send messages ? with no guarantee of success. Or for people who just don?t know how [online dating] works.?

The site encourages people to use its services for three reasons: 1) To save time by letting someone else do the work for you; 2) To take advantage of their online dating expertise; and 3) To have a safer online dating experience. Clients can choose whether or not to disclose right up front that they are using a dating agent.

?Our concept is about doing it all for them, not with algorithms, but with people,? Leufroy-Murat said in an email interview.??We have a team of dating agents who will get to know the member, create their dating profile, sign them up to two sites, find their matches, message them, and organize a date. We become the client online, in other words. The big difference is that we guarantee dates to the member. If we don?t deliver, he gets his money back.?

According to Leufroy-Murat, the site is not a means of deception. The dating agents limit their online interactions with potential dates to 3-4 messages and focus on setting up real-life dates. ?We avoid creating relationships online; we are here to facilitate a meeting,? he said.

The site launched in November of 2011. As of this month, they have had more than 80 clients and nine success stories (that they are aware of). The service is available worldwide.

Share Your Thoughts
How would you feel if you found out your date, who you thought you ?met? online, was facilitated through a Personal Dating Agent? ?Would it make a difference if everything worked out in the end, or would you feel deceived? ?Do you think this is a good service for people who are too busy to use online dating sites, or do you think if they?re too busy to online date, they are too busy to date at all? Share your thoughts in the comments.

Afghan delegation attacked at site of US killings

BALANDI, Afghanistan (AP) ? Militants have attacked an Afghan government delegation visiting the site in one of the two villages in southern Afghanistan where a U.S. soldier is suspected of killing 16 civilians.

The attackers opened fire at the delegation from several sides on Tuesday.

An Associated Press reported witnessed the attack, which is still under way. It's unclear if anyone has been wounded or killed.

The delegation includes two of Afghan President Hamid Karzai's brothers and senior security officials.

A U.S. soldier has been detained in connection with Sunday's shooting rampage that left 16 civilians dead in the villages of Balandi and Alkozai in Panjwai district of Kandahar province.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Hundreds of students in eastern Afghanistan on Tuesday shouted angry slogans against the United States and the American soldier who killed 16 Afghan civilians in a shooting spree, the first significant protest in response to the tragedy.

The killings before dawn Sunday in southern Kandahar province have caused outrage in Afghanistan. But even though most of the dead were women and children, they have not sparked the kind of violent protests seen last month after American soldiers burned Muslim holy books and other Islamic texts.

The more muted response could be a result of Afghans being used to dealing with civilian casualties in over a decade of war. Some have said the slayings in two villages in Panjwai district were more in keeping with Afghans' experience of deadly night raids and airstrikes by U.S.-led forces than the Quran burnings were.

But the students protesting at a university in Jalalabad city, 80 miles (125 kilometers) east of the capital Kabul, were incensed.

"Death to America!" and "Death to the soldier who killed our civilians!" shouted the crowd.

Some carried a banner that called for a public trial of the soldier, who U.S. officials have identified as a married, 38-year-old father of two who was trained as a sniper and recently suffered a head injury in Iraq.

Other protesters burned an effigy of President Barack Obama.

"The reason we are protesting is because of the killing of innocent children and other civilians by this tyrant U.S. soldier," said Sardar Wali, a university student. "We want the United Nations and the Afghan government to publicly try this guy."

Obama has expressed his shock and sadness and extended his condolences to the families of the victims. But he has also said the horrific episode would not speed up plans to pull out foreign forces, despite increasing opposition at home to the war in Afghanistan.

In this Feb. 29, 2012 photo provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, a ringed seal is shown in Yakutat, Alaska. U.S. wildlife officials say a sick?ringed?seal that was captured in southeast Alaska last week appears to be afflicted by the same symptoms suffered last year by ringed?seals and Pacific walrus along northern coastlines. (AP Photo/NOAA, Bill Lucey)

(AP) ? Federal scientists said Wednesday that a nearly bald, lethargic seal recovered from the southeast Alaska coast showed the same symptoms of a disease that sickened ringed seals and Pacific walrus on the state's north coast last year.

Fishermen last week spotted the seal near Yakutat at the top of the Alaska Panhandle, where it was captured and taken to Anchorage. The seal was determined to be so ill that it was euthanized.

Believed to be a ringed seal, it suffered symptoms similar to the ones found in 60 dead seals and 75 diseased seals that were discovered along the Beaufort and Chukchi seas of northern and northwest Alaska beginning in July, according to a National Marine Fisheries Service statement. The areas where the latest animal and the seals were found last year are separated by thousands of miles of water.

"The seal, determined to be a yearling, exhibited almost total hair loss and nodular, ulcerated scabbed skin sores," said veterinary pathologist Kathy Burek-Huntington, who is part of an international group of experts working to the disease's cause. "These sores are consistent with the disease process we have been seeing in the ice seals in the North Slope and Bering Strait areas."

Most of the sickened animals were ringed seals but include 11 spotted seals and eight bearded seals, said Julie Speegle, a spokeswoman for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Diseased ringed seals also were found last year in Canada and Russia.

Ringed seals are named for ring-patterns found on their fur. They are one of five ice-dependent seals in Alaska, with a range only as far south as the northern Bering Sea. The smallest of Alaska's ice seals, they are the main prey of polar bears. They're also the only type of seal that can live in seawater completely covered by ice, using stout front claws to dig breathing holes.

When snow covers the holes, ringed seals dig out lairs and give birth on ice. Pups are born without a thick blubber layer and must live on ice. Polar bears gorge on ringed seal pups during the spring, often capturing them by collapsing lairs.

NOAA is considering listing ringed seals as a threatened species because of projected loss of snow cover and sea ice from climate warming.

A DNA sample of the Yakutat seal will be tested to confirm that it was a ringed seal. Its blubber thickness indicated it was in good body shape.

Sick and dead ringed seals began showing up in July on the Beaufort Sea coast near Barrow, the country's northernmost community. Strandings were reported as far west as Point Lay and Wainwright on the Chukchi Sea. Symptoms, but no deaths, were also observed in Pacific walrus.

The animals had lesions on hind flippers and inside their mouths. Some showed patchy hair loss and skin irritation around the nose and eyes. Stricken live seals were lethargic, allowing people to approach. Necropsies on the dead ringed seals found fluid in lungs, white spots on livers and abnormal growth in brains.

The fisheries service in December declared the deaths an "unusual mortality event," giving researchers access to more funds and expertise to find out what had happened. NOAA last month announced that symptoms were probably not caused by radiation, which was considered because of the timing and size of the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident that followed a tsunami in Japan last year.

Scientists were looking at immune system-related diseases, fungi, man-made and bio-toxins, contaminants, and stressors related to sea ice change. Dr. Stephen Raverty, a veterinary pathologist from the Provincial Veterinary Diagnostic Lab in Canada's British Columbia, said in December that open sores may lead to bacteria invading tissue, causing the animal's immune system to be suppressed.

Diagnosing the problem could be challenging, he said, because the initial virus might only be present for a short time.

Speegle said NOAA had received only a handful of reports of seals in Alaska with symptoms since the end of November and none could be confirmed. In early January, according to the agency, hunters in Alaska's North Slope Borough killed three ringed seals that had complete hair coats and looked healthy but had small lesions on their flippers.

'Chum cam' underwater video survey shows that reef sharks thrive in marine reserves

'Chum cam' underwater video survey shows that reef sharks thrive in marine reserves

Friday, March 9, 2012

A team of scientists, led by the Institute for Ocean Conservation Science at Stony Brook University, used video cameras to count Caribbean reef sharks (Carcharhinus perezi) inside and outside marine reserves on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef in the Caribbean Sea. Using survey data collected from 200 baited remote underwater video (BRUV) cameras, nicknamed "chum cams," the scientists compared the relative abundance of these reef sharks in two marine reserves with those in two areas where fishing is allowed, and demonstrated that the sharks were more abundant in the reserves.

The research findings appear in the paper, "Reef sharks exhibit site-fidelity and higher relative abundance in marine reserves on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef," published online today in the journal PLoS ONE. The purpose of the study, conducted from 2005 through 2010, was to test the hypothesis that carcharhinid shark species, which include requiem and whaler sharks, are more abundant inside no-take marine reserves where fishing for sharks and their prey is prohibited. The authors tested the hypothesis by using BRUV surveys to determine the reef sharks' numbers, and combined these results with acoustic monitoring to measure their site fidelity (remaining within the same local area) in Glover's Reef Marine Reserve, Caye Caulker Marine Reserve, and two reefs where fishing is allowed, all located in Belize.

"Although we know that relatively sedentary reef fish and lobsters benefit from marine reserves, this study now presents visual proof that large, active sharks are also dramatically more abundant inside these protected areas, too," said Mark Bond, lead author and doctoral student at Stony Brook University. "Nearly four times as many chum cam deployments in the marine reserves recorded reef sharks than on similar fished reefs. These areas provide the sharks and other coral reef species a respite from fishing, which means decreased fishing mortality for the sharks and more prey for them to eat."

The video cameras were enclosed in protective housing, and placed on the sea floor with small bait-filled cages positioned in front of them. Sharks, attracted by the smell of the bait, swam to the cameras, which allowed the research team to record, count, and compare shark populations in the marine reserves to those in the areas where fishing is permitted, at no stress to the sharks. In addition to the BRUV surveys, the scientists fitted 34 reef sharks with acoustic transmitters, and tracked their movements, using moored underwater listening stations. They found that the sharks, both juveniles and adults, live year-round within the reserves.

"Scientists who study tigers or jaguars in the wild use camera traps to count them," said Dr. Demian Chapman, assistant professor in the School of Marine & Atmospheric Science at Stony Brook, leader of the research team and assistant director of science of the Institute for Ocean Conservation Science. "It is just as difficult to count sharks in the ocean, so we took a page from the big cat researchers' playbook and deployed baited video cameras to count the sharks. It's only fitting since these large apex predators are the 'big cats' of the sea, and like their feline counterparts, their continued existence on Earth is threatened."

Due to intense fishing, Caribbean reef sharks are listed as "Near Threatened" by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) but it is possible they will be upgraded to "Vulnerable" by IUCN as more data are collected. They live in the western Atlantic Ocean, ranging from Bermuda to southern Brazil, and are the only Atlantic requiem shark species that undergoes its entire life cycles within coral reef ecosystems.

"Caribbean reef sharks and other shark species around the world are threatened by overfishing," said Dr. Ellen K. Pikitch, a professor in the Stony Brook University School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, who co-authored the paper and is executive director of the Institute for Ocean Conservation Science. "Our study demonstrates that marine reserves can help protect shark species that live on coral reefs. Moreover, the use of underwater video monitoring provides us with an excellent tool to determine if populations are recovering and thriving inside these reserves."

"As the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words," said Bond. "As Caribbean nations and other countries consider developing marine reserves, chum cams can virtually transport policy makers and the public beneath the waves and show them the benefits of these protected areas."

Quake monitors gauge quality of Arctic ice

Humans have gotten pretty good at monitoring Arctic sea ice from afar. Since the end of the Reagan era, watchful satellites have measured the reach of the ice cover that marches across Arctic seas each winter and recedes each spring.

And since satellites started sending data back in 1979, scientists have watched the total area of annual ice cover steadily decline. The observation has piqued a flurry of interest in what the future holds for the Arctic and its disappearing ice ? one of the loudest signals of global climate change.

"Satellite measurements are very good at telling you what percentage of the area is covered with sea ice," said Victor C. Tsai, an assistant professor of geophysics at Caltech.

Yet satellites have their limitations, said Tsai, who found that by looking at data from seismic stations ? suites of instruments best known for measuring earthquakes ?? scientists can learn about the quality of sea ice.

"We think we can measure something to do with how strong the ice is," he told OurAmazingPlanet. ?"In order to make predictions about the future, you need to know the strength of the sea ice, and not just what percentage is covered."

Seismic sea ice signal
Like many discoveries, this one came as something of an accident. Tsai was examining data from seismic stations to be sure they were functioning properly, when he noticed something strange in the numbers from two stations near the Bering Sea.

"There was a lack of energy from about December though May," he said, a time when most seismic stations in northern climes usually pick up lots of energy ? or ground shaking ? because winter storms whip up waves that pound Arctic shorelines.

At first he and his collaborators thought the stations were malfunctioning, but the numbers revealed the same pattern, year after year.

"We tried to understand why that was, and we saw, oh yeah, this ties into when you have significant sea ice around those stations," he said. Which made sense, since it's known that sea ice dampens the vigor of ocean waves.

After further investigation, Tsai found a way to mathematically link the seismic data with how packed or broken up the ice is. The research was published in the Nov. 19, 2011 issue of the journal Geophysical Research Letters.

    3. Bees point to genetic basis for thrill-seeking

Short and long term
Tsai emphasized that the methodology is still young, and he's working to fine-tune the math. In addition, a larger network of seismic stations would be required to cover more of the polar regions and make projections of how sea ice might fare in the future, an important part of climate change forecasts.

"Right now we're much better poised to make shorter predictions ? the next week or two ? and it's much more difficult to make predictions for the more distant future," Tsai said.

However, there's one group that would likely be very interested to learn about the strength of sea ice a few weeks in advance ? the growing number of ships crisscrossing Arctic seas.

"I would say that, at least immediately, it would be easier to help the shipping community," Tsai said.?

Facebook loses friends in Germany over privacy breaches

Facebook 'Friend Finder' breaches privacy laws, says German judgeBefore you've even sipped your morning brew, a regional German court has delivered yet another stern judgement affecting a multinational organization. This time it's Facebook back in the dock over the Friend Finder feature, which uploads a user's contact list to Zuckerberg's bunker without proper warning. Another offense involves the ownership of data -- any original photo or music track uploaded to Facebook supposedly belongs to the company and can be used however it likes, which has now been deemed to breach data protection laws. Someone ought to add this to the Harvard Student Handbook.

Maker of Fender guitars files for $200M IPO

(AP) ? The company that makes Fender guitars is going public with a $200 million IPO.

The iconic guitar maker was founded in 1946 by Leo Fender, and Fender guitars were played by some of the world's biggest music stars, from The Beatles to Jimi Hendrix to Eric Clapton.

"The Fender brand in particular is closely associated with the birth of rock 'n roll and has a strong legacy in music and in popular culture," the company said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Fender Musical Instruments Corp. said it's the country's biggest seller of electric, acoustic and bass guitars. It also makes amplifiers and other instruments including banjos, ukuleles and mandolins, and sells instruments under other brands such as Squier, Jackson, Guild, Ovation and Latin Percussion.

About $100 million of the initial public offering's proceeds will go to pay debt, said the Scottsdale, Ariz., company.

Fender intends to list the "FNDR" symbol on the Nasdaq, but didn't say how many shares the company and its shareholders intend to sell or set a price target on its stock. The company also did not say when it intends to go public.

Fender said it posted net income attributable to common stockholders of $3.2 million in 2011, from a net loss of $17.3 million the year before. Revenue grew 13 percent to $700.6 million from $617.8 million.

J.P. Morgan and William Blair are managing the IPO.

Three Vital Keys To Motivation | Self Improvement Blogs from ...

Most individuals immediately turn to the subject of motivation any time a objective, change or challenge comes up. Discovering motivation to start, as well as staying motivated to do what we would like is something just about everyone struggles with. There are volumes written on the subject, some advise dogged dedication and self-discipline others stronger focus and clearer intention. While these play a role there are basic steps to take that are fairly often missed that after firmly in place present pure power and enthusiasm to work toward your goal. Realizing what you seek, having alignment of vision and values mixed with true commitment will provide the vitality it is advisable be successful.

Three Keys To Motivation

Motive: That is the root of the phrase but so typically overlooked. Why would you like what you want? What advantages and outcomes do you seek? The real reasons, the deep reasons. Clue: the stated causes are usually on the floor stuff. Dig deeper; what emotion will it strike in you if you find yourself successful? What?s going to it mean and the way will you or your life be totally different and better. What do you get whenever you get it? By the best way, it is a good time to verify if the outcome and profit will actually be supplied by attaining the stated goal. Many occasions that is not the case and we work onerous for one thing only?Babyquasar Coupons to achieve it and discover that it did not present what we really wanted. Furthermore, visualize your success, really feel the benefits, experience it as totally as possible, imagine all the small print and the emotion of how it feels. Let this remind you of why you?re doing what needs to be done. Do that often.

Alignment: There are two aspects of alignment. One relates specifically to the objective and how it aligns with you; your values and imaginative and prescient to your life. We are able to find far more vitality and enthusiasm for doing things which have deep which means to us and we consider in. Additionally, does it fit into the bigger image and vision of your life? Naturally, you need to spend your time pursuing that which takes you towards you vision. As you relate your goals to your values?but wait, this presumes you?re clear on your private values. So let?s back up; as you might be creating your imaginative and prescient and setting targets take the time to take stock of your values. What are your guiding ideas and what?s most vital to you? If you have not achieved this lately it is nicely worth the effort. Our values are what drives and motivates all our behavior and decisions, change into crystal clear and honor them. This is vital. If your objectives work well inside your values and you?ll connect them to your strong beliefs you are naturally going to be more motivated. That is what makes our targets and in the end our lives meaningful. Be aware that if the targets go in opposition to your values you?ll have a tough time getting them performed and it?ll possible cause you loads of stress and unhappiness as well.

The opposite facet of alignment is you. Are you in alignment emotionally and mentally with what you say you want? Some internal exploration is required here. Do you actually need what you say? And extra importantly, do you imagine you deserve it and are worthy and able to what you seek? Are you single-minded or divided? Of combined emotion relating to attaining the purpose or making the change? If you are, you will not be motivated to start or have the ability to preserve it long. On this case, it might be limiting beliefs, low vanity, a scarcity of readability, attachment or fear. This stuff tend to not handle themselves, deal with them. In case you are wrestling with this sort of problem know that dealing with it?s far simpler than trying to proceed to stay with it. Search steerage to overcome these points extra quickly with a professional coach or therapist if necessary.

Commitment: Let?s face it, even one of the best of us aren?t at our greatest everyday. We should commit to do it. Faux it until you make it when necessary. Nonetheless, I imagine it?s even more crucial to be prepared to recommit. There will be lost battles, this does not imply you lose the war. Plan to recommit to your purpose nevertheless often is needed. For some conditions that may be hourly and even moment to moment like with an habit; cigarettes for instance. Or, on the events you succumb to a slack off day on the health club or office. Be resolute, unwavering and determined and you?re sure to be successful. Consider; most respected and significant things we obtain are completed so over time and because of some effort, failing and struggle. It is the hardest fought victories which can be always the sweetest so if in case you have a goal you?ll be able to consider in and commit to, be prepared to recommit as well.

Connected cAR: Becoming the Cyborg Chauffeur ? Cyborgology

MVS Virtual Cable? and Virtual Signs?

In early February, I attended a fascinating conference hosted by the Telecom Council of Silicon Valley. This is a first rate organization and the conference did not disappoint. Many executives were present from various telecom, mobile, middleware, AR, audio, video, electronics and computer companies to discuss the future of the ?connected car.?

The car is apparently one of the next battlefields for ownership of our personal data and privacy. It is an intimate environment and there will soon be enough sensors to document every human habit and behavior within it. While cars will become the panoptic reporter to our every move, people will also be burdened with an overwhelming amount of data ostensibly aimed at ?aiding? them in the driving task. There will be touch activated windshields, Augmented Reality (AR) navigation lines projected onto the windshield that guide drivers on a track of navigation, and the blending of both scenarios with the addition of ads showing up on screen. Audio feedback based on sensor activity is currently available as a service in certain commercial vehicles. Installed sensors monitor driver behavior and provide immediate audio feedback if a driver changes lanes suddenly, is speeding or engages in other unsafe behaviors.

Imagine being on the road in a ?connected car.? You?re driving, being assisted by various on screen windshield AR applications that guide you through traffic, map your route and suggest places to stop along the way that you might want to visit. Furthermore, you still have the capability to make and answer calls, tell an agent how to respond to email etc? all while driving. You might be drinking a coffee or having a snack as well.

PolySocial Reality (PoSR), is a conceptual model of the space that contains individuals? multiplexed, synchronous and asynchronous individuated data creations. An instance of PoSR might contain behaviors such as walking while talking on a phone, while texting, while the phone checks into foursquare, and sends an update via Twitter and/or Facebook, while replying to incoming friends? status update and/or other messages at the same time. Each instance of PoSR can contain a lot of action, which can cause distraction. Because the actions of individuals may overlap, if true, the potential for distraction in each case compounds.

Without the audio moderating of the sensor model, and even if something similar is installed, the driving task, while always one that consumed all senses, becomes a complex instantiation of PoSR. Bicycles, pedestrians, and/or other vehicles will likely be highly invisible to the driver with so much distraction.

The issue of ?gamification? also becomes a possibility in this scenario. When the projected guidelines overlay the actual windshield, is there a perception of reality that becomes even further abstracted and distorted?

One of the vendors had the solution of limiting design features as a simplification strategy. They suggest that an integrated car phone has limited features, that users will want to use their phone in the car?and pay more to do so. Their main hope is that the legislation in place to control mobile phone use in cars will dissuade people from using their own and risking tickets and fines. It remains to be see whether or not people will forfeit non-compliant, full functionality on a smaller screen, at higher risk but at no extra cost. This company is betting on compliance.

Some of the technology representatives at Connected Car, suggested that this overlay navigation technology, ?the finest available? ? the navigation and technology that is given to fighter pilots?should also be available to each and every driver.

I sat next to a man and whispered, ?I?m worried about the ?gamification? of driving. People are no longer going to see people through their windshields, they?re going to see lines to follow and advertisements instead of others on the road and where they are going.?

He whispered back, ?I?m worried that these companies think that the average driver in the U.S. and/or elsewhere has the same the mental capacity, reflexes and training as those of a jet fighter pilot.?

One of these ?finest available? navigation products is currently being tested in Japan. Japan has a homogenous society. Few foreigners are allowed to stay in Japan for very long and the society and culture operates on rules and customs that have survived for thousands of years. People tend to have had a similar early education and there is a long history of video game usage in Japan. It is fair to say that a trial like that can really only happen in Japan. The likelihood of a successful trial remains to be seen, but it is possible that the homogeneity of the Japanese could help the results.

? Pioneer CyberNavi Navigation screen

A trial like that would be a disaster in the U.S. The U.S. is heterogenous. We have many drivers from many parts of the world, coming from a diversity of educational systems and video game mastery and capabilities. There is no predictable homogeneity to draw from.

This is the problem with not understanding the implications of the PoSR model. Present software has limited capacity to handle a multiplexed, highly hetergenous user. This is why the ?connected car? is potentially dangerous?there isn?t a good ??integrated? design solution for the diversity of people in the world who are going to be tasked with driving in this type environment. The cognitive load is enormous.

In the video below, you can see CyberNavi on the small navigation screen. I saw it demoed on a large heads up display (HUD). Imagine:

YouTube Preview Image

My take from the Connected Car conference is that the ?connected car? won?t necessarily be about humans and the driving task. The ?connected car? is about using humans as a transition technology towards creating more robust automated cars, and the systems that will manage them. The ?connected car? is about AI and the driving task. As the sensor and traffic systems become more integrated, humans will be in the way of their performance. This will become an ?agent based? task, and until it is perfected, humans will be used as training models.

It?s a crude AI, at the moment, but with real potential. Until it arrives, we?ll be the Cyborg Chauffeur for the ?connected cAR.?

Sally Applin is a Ph.D. Candidate at the University of Kent at Canterbury, UK, in the Centre for Social Anthropology and Computing (CSAC). Sally researches the impact of technology on culture, and vice versa.

Social Media for Scientists Part 4: On The Road

A couple weeks ago, I braved the freezing north to speak at the University of Washington for a workshop focusing on Social Media for Scientists. The event was co-sponsored by AFSUW, Washington Sea Grant, and COSEE OLC as a part of the Beyond the Ivory Tower series, a set of free public lectures that hopes to provide researchers with tools and techniques to reach audiences and broaden the impacts of their work. I was teamed up with the effortlessly incredible Liz Neeley, COMPASS? super ninja of science communication, to try and convince a room full of hardy Seattle scientists that, indeed, every lab should tweet.

I truly do believe that Facebook, Twitter, and other social media are essential for every scientist to use. Not only are they the communication platforms of the future, they hold the potential to revolutionize how we do science in the first place. It seems foolish at best that in scientific circles we deride the use of these networks that, literally, two thirds of the world?s population are connecting through. I?ve laid out the arguments before (see the post list below), and will surely continue to talk about this topic until I go hoarse. Simply put, it?s not a question that scientists need to increasingly engage with new media platforms to stay relevant in this digital age. The question is how.

For that, I?m going to point you toward the freshly launched Social Media for Science Google+ Page and the workshop wiki, which is an evolving collection of information and resources, as well as the Storify of the afternoon by Jessica Rohde. You can also download my slides from slideshare, or watch the video of my talk:
