Kremlin keeps its cool: Russian rally for jailed activist ends peacefully

Hundreds gathered in central Moscow today for an unauthorized rally to demand freedom for jailed activist Sergei Udaltsov. Despite a heavy police presence, it unfolded without incident.?

Hundreds of Russians gathered on Moscow's central Pushkin Square Thursday evening to demand freedom for Sergei Udaltsov and other "political prisoners" being held by authorities for protesting against allegedly fraudulent parliamentary elections.

They managed to avoid a crackdown by ranks of heavily-armored riot police by keeping the event within the confines of a permitted "meeting with Duma deputies" and eschewing the open slogans and banners that would make it a forbidden "protest rally."

The main reason for the meeting was the continuous detention of Mr. Udaltsov, a left-wing street organizer who has been re-arrested three times since being picked up for "jaywalking"?in Moscow on election day almost a month ago.

Over 2,000 people signed a Facebook pledge to attend the meeting but only a few hundred braved the freezing temperatures, massed police, and an explicit warning from Moscow authorities that the rally had been banned.

"We do not want to commit any illegal actions, but authorities didn't allow us to discuss this issue in public, either in the form of a rally or in the form of a picket," says Ilya Ponomaryov, a Duma deputy with the left-wing A Just Russia party and one of the organizers.?"So we have chosen to go with the format of public meeting with Duma deputies, because under the law this format doesn't require explicit permission from the authorities."

Mr. Ponomaryov and Communist Party deputies Alexander Yuschchenko and Oleg Smolin?presided over the tense gathering, under the stares of massed police. They eventually opened the floor to other participants to address the crowd.?Some say they fear for the life of Udaltsov, who staged a hunger strike to protest his pre-emptive arrest and has been hospitalized under heavy police guard?for much of the past three weeks.

On Tuesday a Moscow judge postponed his appeal on a previous arrest, and ordered him to remain in custody for at least another 10 days.

"Udaltsov's case has nothing to do with the law. I am here to protest against this situation," says protester Natalya Chernysheva. "I feel as if the same thing could happen to any of us. We need to come to such meetings as long as it is still possible, in the hope that maybe things will change."

The meeting broke up peacefully after a couple of hours. Some said the fact that police did not move in to make arrests, as they often do, was a hopeful sign for the future.

"I feel that it's everyone's duty to support political prisoners," says Yana Chabovskaya, a teacher. "I don't share Udaltsov's political views, but I support his right to have them. We have to go on fighting for those rights, and if we come out in large enough numbers it will make it much more difficult for them to arrest us."

Lindsay Lohan not on board for Dubai New Year's boat bash (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Rest easy, everyone, Lindsay Lohan is not returning to her partying ways.

At least not in Dubai on New Year's Eve.

Despite earlier reports that the actress/recent Playboy cover model would be ringing in 2012 at a star-studded gala aboard the ocean liner QE2 in the United Arab Emirates city, Lohan's spokesperson says she won't be in attendance.

"At no point was Lindsay ever considering going to Dubai for New Year's Eve," the actress' representative told TheWrap.

Rumors that the "Mean Girls" star would be welcoming 2012 in Dubai began to swirl after reports emerged that Lohan would participate in a party on the QE2 -- currently docked at Dubai's Port Rashid Cruise Terminal -- that would also be attended by former "Baywatch" babe Pamela Anderson and British cricket player Allan Lamb.

TheWrap's request for comment from Anderson's representative has not yet been answered.

Lohan is so angry about the party rumors that her attorneys are preparing to issue a cease-and-desist order to the organizers of the party, TMZ reports. Lohan's representative declined to comment on any potential legal actions on the actress' part.

Earlier this week, TMZ reported that the actress, who in the past has reportedly raked in big paydays for attending parties, had shot down a number of offers to attend New Year's Eve soirees in light of her recent legal woes.

Lohan is currently working through a regimen of community service and therapy sessions, after violating her probation stemming from a DUI arrest. During a progress hearing earlier this month, Judge Stephanie Sautner praised the actress' efforts, telling her, "Miss Lohan, you have actually done your work."

6.8M iOS, Android Devices Activated on Christmas Day Says Analytics Firm

People the world over activated a record breaking 6.8 million Android and iOS devices on Christmas Day this year.

According to app analytics firm Flurry, on Christmas Day, 6.8 million iOS and Android devices were activated, more than double the 2.5 million devices that were activated last year on the same day, representing an increase of 125 per cent.

The company said that during the first 20 days of December, 1.3 million to 1.8 million Android and iOS devices were activated each day, with an average of 1.5 million devices each day. On December 25, the number increased by more than 353 per cent, reaching 6.8 million.

A high number of device would also result in record breaking app downloads. Flurry, which tracks more than 140,000 applications, said that people downloaded an average of 108 million applications every day but on Christmas Day, the number soared to 242 million, representing an increase of 125 per cent.

"Historically, more iOS and Android apps are downloaded on Christmas than on any other day of the year. This is due to a massive influx of smartphones and tablets given as gifts. As fast as loved-ones can unwrap their shiny, new Galaxy IIs, iPhones, iPads, Kindle Fires, et cetera, they start loading them up with new apps," the company said.

Rockets fired at Israel from Gaza: army

JERUSALEM, Dec 28, 2011 (AFP): Palestinian militants fired two rockets from the Gaza Strip into southern Israel late on Wednesday, causing neither casualties nor damage, the Israeli military said.

"Two rockets fired from Gaza exploded in open fields in the Eshkol region," an army spokesman told AFP, adding that there were no casualties or damage.

Earlier on Wednesday, a rocket fired from Gaza landed in the Sha'ar Hanegev region. It did not explode or cause any casualties or damage, police said.

The attacks came after two Israeli air raids on the Gaza Strip killed one Palestinian and wounded about 20 others late on Tuesday.

The Israeli army said the strikes were against "global jihad" targets in the Palestinian territory who were planning cross-border attacks from neighbouring Egypt.

China premier urges protection of farmers' rights

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has urged officials to share profits from the development of rural land with the millions of farmers who have to give it up.

Wen's speech to officials at a work conference Tuesday comes a week after southern Chinese officials gave in to protesting villagers after a two-week standoff with police over a land dispute.

He says China can no longer sacrifice farmers' land rights for the sake of reducing the cost of urbanization and industrialization.

Last Wednesday, the village of Wukan called off protests that had driven out local officials after a provincial party official agreed to release detainees and return some confiscated land to farmers.

Land disputes cause tens of thousands of protests in China every year.

Witness in Mass. terror case: I admired bin Laden (AP)

BOSTON ? Lawyers for a Massachusetts man charged with trying to help al-Qaida challenged the credibility of a friend who testified that the man encouraged him to watch jihadist videos and read publications promoting violent jihad.

Prosecutors say Tarek Mehanna traveled to Yemen to seek terrorist training. When that failed, he returned home to Sudbury and allegedly began translating and distributing materials promoting terrorism.

On Friday, Mehanna's lawyer cross-examined Ali Aboubakr, who testified a day earlier that Mehanna referred to Osama bin Laden as "my real father" and praised the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Aboubakr said he did not always hold the views expressed by Mehanna but went along with them because he wanted to "get his approval."

During cross-examination, Aboubakr acknowledged that he also admired bin Laden and had purchased books on jihad and watched jihadist videos on his own. He said that although he, Mehanna and other friends often talked about jihad, he did not consider them a terrorist cell.

Mehanna's attorney, Janice Bassil, peppered Aboubakr with questions about the online chats the two men had in 2006, when prosecutors allege that Mehanna was trying to promote violent jihad.

Aboubakr acknowledged that he admired Osama bin Laden and was not pressured to do so by Mehanna.

"He wasn't influencing you ? this was something you felt?" Bassil asked.

"Yes," Aboubakr replied.

Aboubakr said several times Thursday that he feigned interest in certain subjects because he wanted to impress Mehanna. Bassil suggested that it was only after Mehanna was charged and Aboubakr was questioned by authorities that he decided to say he felt a need to impress Mehanna by agreeing with him in his desire to wage jihad against the United States.

On Friday, Aboubakr said there were times he saw Mehanna as his "educator." But he also acknowledged that he told a grand jury that he did not believe Mehanna was trying to teach him.

"It's only today, after you got that summons ... that you're saying, `Oh, I did this because I wanted Tarek to like me,'" Bassil said.

"No, this is not the first time I felt that way," Aboubakr replied.

Aboubakr was the first of several friends expected to testify against Mehanna under grants of immunity.

Both Mehanna, 29, and Aboubakr, 25, are American-born citizens from wealthy Boston suburbs.

Aboubkar testified Thursday that he and Mehanna would chat online and watch videos at Mehanna's home. He said one video showed the beheading of American businessman Nicholas Berg in Iraq. Others showed suicide bombers.

Mehanna's lawyers deny he was promoting terrorism and say he was exercising his right to free speech when he expressed his anger over the U.S. invasion of Iraq. They say he visited Yemen to find religious schools.

Testimony is scheduled to resume Monday.

Japan auto output still slowed from Thai flood (AP)

TOKYO ? The manufacturing disruptions from the flooding in Thailand are continuing to take their toll on Japanese automakers.

Honda Motor Co. said Friday it is still unclear when its flooded Thai auto plant that has annual capacity of 240,000 vehicles can restart production. The automaker said production reductions will continue in Japan, North America and Europe, as well as Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia and Taiwan.

Company spokesman Tomohiro Okada said production in Vietnam, India and Pakistan, which is so far unaffected, would likely have to be reduced due to shortages of parts, although details were not yet decided.

Similarly, Toyota Motor Corp. said stoppages it had previously projected as lasting through Nov. 5 will continue through Nov. 12, costing Japan's top automaker 69,000 vehicles in lost production in Thailand, and 22,000 vehicles in Japan.

Nissan Motor Co. said supply shortages will mean 40,000 vehicles in lost production in Thailand, but nowhere else so far. There is a risk of a production loss of 20,000 vehicles in Japan, it said.

The automakers had already been battered by parts shortages caused by the March tsunami disaster in northeastern Japan when the latest problems emerged from the flooding in Thailand.

Thailand's worst floods in more than half a century were caused by massive monsoon rains. Water began creeping into the country's capital, Bangkok, last month. Experts have warned about possible health problems.

Honda, which suffered a 56 percent drop in July-September quarterly profit, has not given an earnings forecast for the fiscal year through March 2012, acknowledging that the Thai flooding made that too difficult.

Nissan's profit has held up a better on strong sales in emerging markets. Toyota reports earnings next week.

(AP) ? Groupon, the company that pioneered online group discounts, saw its stock rise sharply in its public debut Friday, showing strong demand for an Internet company whose business model is considered unsustainable by some analysts.

Groupon's stock jumped $8.30, or more than 40 percent, to $28.30 Friday afternoon after earlier trading as high as $31.14. Big fluctuations are common for freshly public companies, and Groupon's first-day rise was largely expected.

Still, analysts said this doesn't ease worries about the risks concerning the company ? especially as the stock price increases.

"Until investors see the full profit model unfold over time, expect this stock to be highly volatile with increasing risk as the market cap rises," said Kathleen Shelton Smith, principal of Renaissance Capital, which operates IPOhome.com. "The first day of trading is typically more about supply and demand. Fundamentals will take over in the long run."

Groupon has faced scrutiny about its high marketing expenses, enormous employee base and even the way it accounted for revenue until an SEC inquiry prompted a restatement.

Chicago-based Groupon Inc. sends out frequent emails to subscribers offering a chance to buy discount deals for anything from laser hair removal to weekend getaways. The company takes a cut of what people pay and gives the rest to the merchant.

Though it's spawned many copycats after its 2008 launch, Groupon has the advantage of being first. This has meant brand recognition and investor demand, as evidenced by its sizzling public debut.

Groupon is selling 5.5 percent of its available shares. Though not unprecedented, the amount is below that of many prominent tech companies, such as Google Inc. and more recently LinkedIn Corp., in recent years.

On Thursday, the company priced its IPO at $20 per share. That was above its expected range of $16 to $18. It gave Groupon a market value of $12.7 billion, below only Google's among tech company IPOs. With Friday's stock price jump, Groupon's value rose to $18 billion.

Another Internet darling, professional networking service LinkedIn, saw its stock soar to $122.70 on its opening day in May after pricing at $45. Since then, the stock has settled lower but was still trading at $80 late Friday morning.

Groupon's shares rose amid a decline in the broader market. The Dow Jones industrial average was down 183.91, or 1.5 percent, to 11,860.56.

The stock is trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market under the ticker symbol "GRPN."

A year out, Obama campaign makes volunteer push

(AP) ? Grass-roots volunteers flocked to Barack Obama last time. This time, the president's campaign is in recruiting mode.

Facing no primary challenger, Obama is trying to rebuild a massive organization of supporters to help boost his efforts next year in the face of a struggling economy and weakened political standing.

Obama's campaign has spent the past week holding about 1,500 events around the nation, from small neighborhood gatherings to one-on-one meetings in coffeehouses, marking the one year to go before the incumbent Democrat faces the electorate. The events, including a chunk of them this weekend, comprise the nuts-and-bolts of a campaign: local phone banks, voter registration drives, door-to-door voter canvassing and house parties. And they're all aimed at organizing the legions of activists who formed the core of Obama's coalition in 2008 ? black and Latino voters, women and college students and voters entering the workforce ? long before Election Day 2012.

Such activities could help determine next year whether Obama can mobilize sufficient support to overcome the larger forces acting against his campaign; namely, broad concerns among the public over joblessness and the direction of the country as well as disillusionment among some of his 2008 supporters.

Back then, Obama built a large base of volunteers in dozens of states that held primaries and caucuses and then quickly moved on to the general election. Many of the volunteers were drawn to Obama because he was new to the national stage and sounding a message of hope and change. Such support was said to contribute to victories in states typically unfriendly to Democrats, such as Indiana and North Carolina.

But this time, Obama is the president with a governing record that doesn't sit well with some who worked to help him get elected.

His campaign is undeterred.

"Block by block, person by person, student by student, we are going to build the biggest grass-roots effort in American political history," declared campaign manager Jim Messina at an event Wednesday at the University of Pennsylvania.

The campaign held the Philadelphia round-table discussion to launch a program aimed at mobilizing young voters on college campuses. Messina told about 250 college and high school students and others watching online that there were 8 million registered voters between the ages of 18 and 21 who weren't old enough to vote in 2008 but would be harnessed to support the president.

Yet, the young voters, many of whom were galvanized by ending the Iraq war in 2008, are not an easy sell this time.

In 2008, Obama won voters between the ages of 18-29 by a margin of about 2-to-1, but polling has shown some signs of softening support as many recent college graduates face high levels of unemployment. The students heard from Messina, White House policy adviser Melody Barnes and others who trumpeted the administration's support for college aid and efforts to maintain health care coverage for young people.

Kyle Musto, a 17-year-old high school senior from West Philadelphia, attended the event but said he was undecided as he considers his first vote in a presidential election. "I have friends who are very opposed to Obama. I have friends who are very pro-Obama. I'm very open to anything," he said.

Meetings like this are more common because Obama has avoided a Democratic challenger and his team can't point to contested primaries and caucuses as reasons for people to get involved now. So they are finding motivation elsewhere.

As Obama has tried to win passage of elements of his jobs agenda in Congress, party loyalists regularly receive emailed updates from campaign officials urging them to pressure Republican lawmakers by phone, email or Twitter. At the Philadelphia event, students were encouraged to text their ZIP code and the phrase "Greater Together," the name of the young voter program, to the campaign so they could receive more information. Students were also asked to urge their Facebook friends to support the campaign.

Others point to the Republican presidential debates as a motivating tool.

"Republicans have done a great job of firing up the Democratic base, giving us a sense of who they are," said Democratic strategist Steve Hildebrand, a top Obama campaign aide in 2008.

The 1,500 events will help the campaign assess the status of its organization community by community. Volunteers have logged thousands of phone calls encouraging past supporters to participate while on Sunday, campaign staffers will fan out across the country for low-dollar fundraisers in New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Washington, Chicago, Nashville, Tenn., and Atlanta.

The campaign, meanwhile, is planning to use January's Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary as a way of organizing tool for 2012 ? both states are expected to be contested in the fall election.

The approach resembles the extra attention President Bill Clinton paid on the two states in 1996 even though he didn't have a primary opponent. In the weeks before the early contests, Clinton and top administration officials traveled to Iowa and New Hampshire to offer rebuttals of the Republican field while the campaign held events around the state.

Obama's campaign has opened eight offices across Iowa and told reporters this week it had held more than 700 training sessions and made more than 100,000 phone calls to Iowans since the campaign opened in April. In New Hampshire, the campaign is opening its second office this weekend and has logged more than 90,000 phone calls and 2,200 one-on-one meetings across the state, all aimed at boosting turnout and support in 2012.

"You've got to sell this as a building block for the general" election, said Charlie Baker, a veteran field organizer of Democratic presidential campaigns who ran President Bill Clinton's New Hampshire effort in 1996.

Chrysler takes aim at two-tier wage system

By By Paul A. Eisenstein

Carlos Osorio / AP

The number of direct hours of labor in a typical Detroit product has been dropping steadily, to under 20 in some cases.

?

It took Detroit?s automakers decades to win a money-saving two-tier wage structure from the United Auto Workers Union. But that might be about to change at Chrysler.

The automaker?s CEO Sergio Marchionne now says he?d rather have all his workers on the same pay scale, hinting at big changes when the maker?s new contract expires in 2015.

That has plenty of folks in the auto industry scratching their heads and wondering what the executive ? who also heads Chrysler?s Italian partner Fiat?? has in mind.

What?s clear is that the UAW also wants to eliminate the two-tier structure, something that has divided the union and nearly led to the rejection of this year?s contracts with Chrysler, General Motors and Ford.

?This economic disparity between people on the (production) line is not something that can go on indefinitely,? Marchionne told reporters during a conference call to discuss the carmaker?s quarterly earnings.

Ironically, industry analysts say that reduced labor costs played a major factor in the $212 million profit Chrysler made as it clawed its way back into the black in the latest?quarter.

Newly hired workers ? about 13 percent of Chrysler's?hourly work force ? earn just $14 to $16 an hour in wages and about $25 when all their benefits and other costs are added in.? That?s roughly half what it costs to employ a veteran member of Chrysler?s 26,000-strong UAW work force.

But those costs will be going up. Going into this year?s contract talks with Detroit?s Big Three, the UAW was well aware that it was not going to win much in the way of new money, so it had to focus on a short list of gains that included so-called signing bonuses and cash to offset inflation during the course of the four-year contract.

But it was clear there was strong rank-and-file opposition to the two-tier wage system ? which was approved by the UAW during 2007 contract talks?to help the industry weather what was clearly going to be a tough recession.

Going into this year?s contract talks, UAW President Bob King asserted that workers in the second tier were not ?making a living wage,? but in the end he had to settle for modest pay increases of about $3 an hour for those new hires.

The response was unavoidable, with workers approving their tentative contracts by some of the largest margins seen in decades. In fact, if not for aggressive lobbying by King and other senior leaders the Ford contract very likely would have been rejected. And UAW leaders had to use a procedural trick to ensure ratification of Chrysler?s contract.

That clearly wasn?t lost on Marchionne, who is counting on big growth at Chrysler ? the smallest and most troubled of the Detroit automakers.

Facing even more serious problems with unions back in Italy, Marchionne has hinted he might make Chrysler the dominant partner in the trans-Atlantic alliance. To do that, it would help to have?the UAW ?on his side,? notes analyst Joe Phillippi of AutoTrends Consulting. And that might require giving up the two-tier wage structure, he added.

But it might?not be as serious a loss as that might seem. There?s no question that Detroit needed a break, especially going into the 2007 contract talks, when UAW workers were taking home wages and benefits worth?some?$76 an hour.

Today labor costs for even veteran employees have been reduced by a third, even as non-union competitors, such as the Honda plant in Marysville, Ohio, have seen their own costs rise.

But there?s something that may be more significant than the wages and benefits workers earn:?concessions the UAW has granted permitting Chrysler and its domestic competitors to steadily improve productivity.

Plants that once employed 5,000 workers now require less than half that staffing. The number of direct hours of labor in a typical Detroit product has been dropping steadily, meanwhile, to under 20 in some cases.?

Even at $50 an hour, notes Phillippi, assembly line labor accounts for barely $1,000 to $2,000 of the $30,000 cost of a typical U.S.-built car.

Keeping the UAW happy may?be well worth giving up the second tier, which Marchionne said would approach 25 percent of the total Chrysler workforce by 2015, when the current contract expires.

Those who know the executive believe this change wouldn?t be a simple giveback. The Canadian-educated Marchionne would almost certainly demand a quid-pro-quo, possibly meaning further concessions by veteran workers. At the very least, eliminating the second tier would be offset by holding back cost increases elsewhere.

In his conversation with reporters, Marchionne suggested his goal would be to convince the UAW ?to accept the downside while rewarding people on the upside.?

The new Detroit contracts include significant improvements in profit sharing bonuses. The next time around, Chrysler may very well seek to get even more of its labor costs linked to its performance, so workers would see major gains during good years while taking pay cuts in the bad times.

Whether the UAW and its members would accept that trade-off remains to be seen.

AMD to cut 1,400 workers, new CEO's first big move (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? Advanced Micro Devices Inc. is cutting some 1,400 workers as a weak computer market and manufacturing delays have hurt the world's second-biggest maker of microprocessors for PCs.

The layoffs announced Thursday amount to about 12 percent of the company's 12,000 workers and are the first big move by AMD's new CEO, Rory Read, who was hired from Lenovo Group in August. The cuts will unfold over the next five months.

AMD is struggling with an industrywide problem: PC sales growth, particularly in the U.S. and Europe, has been anemic because of the down economy and competition from smartphones and tablets.

Although PC shipments continue to grow, the pace is slowing sharply ? and more than market research firms IDC and Gartner Inc. expected. That has raised concerns about the strength of the market going in to the holiday shopping season.

Most of AMD's business is in chips for PCs; it doesn't have a meaningful presence in smartphones and tablets.

Read's job in large part is to help devise a strategy for AMD to penetrate computing markets where it and rival Intel Corp. have been largely absent. The battle has taken on a new dimension as AMD's and Intel's market share in PCs has reached a steady balance for years ? Intel's chips are in about 80 percent of the world's PCs, and AMD's are in essentially the rest.

Not having much presence in mobile devices has hurt AMD more than Intel because of its smaller size and it was a key reason AMD ousted Read's predecessor, Dirk Meyer, in January.

Meyer in some ways had an excuse: He was orchestrating triage as he tried to manage the company's spinoff of its manufacturing operations while fending off Intel and overseeing the launch of an important new type of chip for AMD. That chip can process sophisticated graphics and general data on the same piece of silicon, a technical achievement.

The rise of mobile devices, meanwhile, is benefiting chip makers such as Qualcomm Inc. and Texas Instruments Inc., whose processors were designed to consume less power.

A variety of financial struggles has led to several rounds of layoffs at AMD in recent years. It let about 3,300 workers go in 2008 and 2009.

Contributing to Thursday's announcement were manufacturing problems that have postponed the shipment of AMD's newest chips, which it calls "accelerated processing units."

The layoffs and other unspecified operational changes are expected to save $200 million in 2012. A company spokesman said is severance benefits will vary based on location and local laws.

AMD shares increased 5 cents, or nearly 1 percent, to $5.78 in extended trading Thursday after the cuts were announced.

PFT: Bears 'grinding me into a pulp,' Forte says

Pittsburgh Steelers v Baltimore RavensGetty Images

As we reach the exact midpoint of the season ? with eight weeks in the books and eight more to come after Sunday and Monday ? I?ve managed to slap a temporary tourniquet onto the competition, matching Rosenthal with a record of 9-4 for the Week Eight picks.

But I?m still stuck in a seven-game hole.? And I?ve only got two chances this week to gain ground.

Needless to say, I?ll be openly rooting for the Titans and Steelers on Sunday.? To the chagrin of Titans and Steelers fans everywhere.

For the year, Rosenthal has a record of 80-36.? I?m now at 73-43.

Jets at Bills

Florio?s take:? Wins over the overmatched Dolphins and overrated Chargers have caused the Jets to spend the bye week thinking they?re better than they are.? They?re not.? The Bills have proven that they have staying power, and they have the firepower to stay ahead of the Jets for the full game, not just part of it.

Florio?s pick:? Bills 27, Jets 20.

Rosenthal?s take: The Jets think they found their running game and Plaxico Burress? mojo before the bye.? The Bills think they found a pass rush with Marcel Dareus moving to nose tackle. I think the Bills will find a way to keep their home record perfect because the Bills running game will roll and Mark Sanchez isn?t made for shootouts.

Rosenthal?s pick: Bills 30, Jets 27.

Seahawks at Cowboys

Florio?s take:? Though the Cowboys can?t play up to the level of their competition, they know how to take care of business against bad teams.

Florio?s pick:? Cowboys 41, Seahawks 20.

Rosenthal?s take: Jerry Jones says Cowboys fans shouldn?t focus on the team?s humbling loss to the Eagles. That?s easier to say when Seattle is next on the schedule. Tarvaris Jackson amazingly isn?t the Seahawks? biggest problem. He?s just not nearly good enough to overcome Seattle?s total absence of a running game and terrible special teams.

Rosenthal?s pick: Cowboys 30, Seahawks 17.

Browns at Texans

Florio?s take:? With the Colts, Titans, and Jaguars vanquished, the Texans have a clear path to their first playoff berth.? To get there, they need to drop the hammer when playing inferior opponents at home.? The Browns had better get comfortable in the AFC North basement.

Florio?s pick:? Texans 34, Browns 17.

Rosenthal?s take: Browns fans are starting to notice that the Browns offense is worse under Pat Shurmur and Mike Holmgren than it was under Eric Mangini. Houston?s offseason coaching move has worked much better. Wade Phillips is my pick for coordinator of the year, if that was actually an award.

Rosenthal?s pick: Texans 24, Browns 13.

Falcons at Colts

Florio?s take:? The Falcons need to keep winning.? The Colts need to keep losing.? Both teams will meet their objectives.

Florio?s pick:? Falcons 36, Colts 19.

Rosenthal?s take: The Falcons have played in four straight dome games, and they get three straight in Atlanta after this one. In short:? They should enter December in good playoff position.? That little nugget was my way of not talking about the Colts, because there?s nothing left to say.

Rosenthal?s pick: Falcons 26, Colts 21.

Dolphins at Chiefs

Florio?s take:? The Chiefs need to keep winning.? The Dolphins need to keep losing.? Both teams will meet their objectives.

Florio?s pick:? Chiefs 31, Dolphins 14.

Rosenthal?s take: This looks like a dangerous spot for the Chiefs. The Dolphins keep every game competitive, even against good teams like the Giants. Kansas City isn?t talented enough to take any team lightly, and they are coming off an emotional high on a short week.? Take the Dolphins to cover and the Chiefs to win. Yeah, I?m a wimp.

Rosenthal?s pick: Chiefs 23, Dolphins 21.

Buccaneers at Saints

Florio?s take:? The up-and-down Bucs have won two in a row in New Orleans.? The up-and-down Saints are reeling from a loss to the Rams.? This one could go either way.? Call it a hunch, but even while operating from the coaching booth it?s hard to imagine Sean Payton not coming up with a way to win this one.

Florio?s pick:? Saints 27, Buccaneers 24.

Rosenthal?s take: The Saints are a different team at home, winning all three games by an average score of 44-17. (The Colts blowout looms large, but the Saints also waxed the Bears.) The Bucs are a different team than their record indicates.? With all four wins coming in one-score games, the Bucs have been lucky. Tampa doesn?t stand out in any facet of offense or defense.

Rosenthal?s pick: Saints 35, Bucs 28.

49ers at Redskins

Florio?s take:? Last week?s win by the Rams over the Saints is a reminder that anything can happen in the NFL.? And that?s precisely what 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh needed to see in order to get his players to guard against a letdown in D.C.

Florio?s pick:? 49ers 20, Redskins 14.

Rosenthal?s take: This is the wrong matchup for Washington. They give up too many big plays on the ground (hello Fred Jackson) and the collapsing offensive line can?t handle the 49ers? front seven. John Beck is 0-6 in six career starts.? If it goes to 0-7, Washington?s playoff hopes are just about done.

Rosenthal?s pick: 49ers 23, Redskins 14.

Broncos at Raiders

Florio?s take:? When Tebow tries to take a knee on Sunday, he?ll tumble into a Black Hole.? The Raiders are rested and ready to make better use of Carson Palmer.? With or without Darren McFadden, the Broncos can?t beat anyone but the Dolphins.

Florio?s pick:? Raiders 37, Broncos 17.

Rosenthal?s take: The AFC West will likely get only one playoff team this year. That means the Raiders, Chiefs, and Chargers can?t afford any slip-ups to the division also-ran.? The Oakland are lucky to face the Broncos at a good time: While they are still starting Tim Tebow.

Rosenthal?s pick: Raiders 24, Broncos 10.

Bengals at Titans

Florio?s take:? Rosenthal and I make our picks without knowing the other guy?s selections.? But since Rosenthal apparently is preparing to add a tiger head tattoo to a collection that includes Pat Patriot on one shoulder and a fleur-de-lis on the other, and given that I have a lot of ground to gain in the season-to-date standings, I?ll assume that he continues to buy the Bengals, who have yet to play the Steelers or the Ravens.? This week, I?ll trust in the team that already has beaten one of Cincinnati?s chief AFC North rivals ? even though I?m prepared to put no trust in Chris Johnson.

Florio?s pick:? Titans 24, Bengals 21.

Rosenthal?s take: A matchup of two winning teams that no one takes seriously. The Bengals look closer to being contenders because of a truly stout defensive line, strong special teams, and the belief of a young team that doesn?t know any better. Perhaps the Bengals will be taken seriously once they are 6-2.

Rosenthal?s pick: Bengals 16, Titans 13.

Rams at Cardinals

Florio?s take:? The two teams for which Kurt Warner starred currently are struggling at the quarterback position.? Sam Bradford continues to deal with a high ankle sprain, and Cardinals fans can?t figure out whether they prefer a healthy or an injured Kevin Kolb.? The battle-hardened Rams get the benefit of the doubt after shocking the Saints behind A.J. Feeley.

Florio?s pick:? Rams 28, Cardinals 21.

Rosenthal?s take: I?m not sure whether the quarterback matchup will be Sam Bradford versus Kevin Kolb or A.J. Feeley versus John Skelton. The Rams won in spite of Feeley last week; he was spraying passes.? Skelton is popular in Arizona only because fans forgot how he played last year.? I?ve already spent too many words on a game no one is going to watch.

Rosenthal?s pick: Rams 24, Cardinals 20.

Giants at Patriots

Florio?s take:? It?s yet another Super Bowl rematch (there are at least 15 of them this year), and most of them have seen the team that won the Super Bowl prevail in the 2011 regular-season reunion.? Last week, the Bills broke that trend by beating the Redskins.? This week, the trend of beating the trend continues.? Even though the team that first figured out how to beat Tom Brady will likely try to use the same formula (i.e., pound the pretty boy into the ground), the Pats are dangerous when motivated ? and they typically are extremely motivated after losing a game.

Florio?s pick:? Patriots 35, Giants 27.

Rosenthal?s take: I was attending my first Super Bowl the last time these teams played, way back when I was 11. This matchup has a lot of similarities. New York?s pass rush can get after Tom Brady and Eli Manning comes into the game playing well. That?s a long way of saying this game will be tight, but the Patriots are too good coming off a loss, especially at home, to suffer another upset.

Rosenthal?s pick: Patriots 31, Giants 27.

Packers at Chargers

Florio?s take:? In this craziest of NFL seasons, it would be fitting for the suddenly struggling Chargers to take a chunk out of the unbeaten defending champs.? But the Packers are playing like a team on loan from a higher level of football, and they?re coming off a bye.? Throw in the fact that they?ve never lost to the Chargers in San Diego, and the Packers are poised to move to 8-0.

Florio?s pick:? Packers 33, Chargers 21.

Rosenthal?s take: In theory, the Packers could be walking into a hornet?s nest. This is a huge game for San Diego coming off two home losses. Philip Rivers wants to put The Phumble behind him. In reality, the Chargers defense doesn?t do anything well. The secondary is searching for answers. That?s not how you want to enter a game against Aaron Rodgers.

Rosenthal?s pick: Packers 35, Chargers 24.

Ravens at Steelers

Florio?s take:? The Steelers carry a four-game winning streak into a game for which they may not have four healthy linebackers.? But it doesn?t matter.? Motivated by a 35-7 Week One thumping that seems so distant it may as well have been Week One of the 2004 season, the Steelers will find a way to hold serve at home.? They might even turn the tables with a blowout of Baltimore, but I?ll stick with a close game in the hopes that NBC will be able to carry a huge rating for all three hours on Sunday night.

Florio?s pick:? Steelers 16, Ravens 13.

Rosenthal?s take: Everything points to the Steelers based on the last two weeks. Everyone will pick the Steelers in this game. Florio will pick the Steelers. All of that makes me want to pick the Ravens because that?s usually how things work out. (Plus picking against Florio is generally a profitable strategy.)

Rosenthal?s pick: Ravens 20, Steelers 17.

Bears at Eagles

Florio?s take:? The Dream Team is back, so spread the word.? Actually, they?ll do a good job of spreading the word on their own, by spreading the ball in balanced fashion between passes and runs.? Andy Reid does some of his best coaching with his back pressed firmly against the wall.? At 3-4 and two games behind the Giants, his back will remain their indefinitely.

Florio?s pick:? Eagles 28, Bears 17.

Rosenthal?s take: The Eagles aren?t the only team coming into this game playing well. Chicago tightened up its pass protection and defense before the bye. Jay Cutler is playing well. This is a huge game in the NFC playoff picture and won?t be the cakewalk for Philly everyone expects.

Rosenthal?s pick: Eagles 28, Bears 27.

The Best of Personal Finance: What to Look For in Mobile Apps ...

Financial management is like puberty? it exempts no one. Even the richest man in the world can trip into the deepest bowels of poverty should he neglect his finances. ?But even not-so-rich people have more resources at hand, primarily due to web services and mobile apps. ? Ever bought an on-sale item only to end up paying 150 percent of the original price because of overdraft fees or overdue payments? ?It?s a bit easier to avoid such tragedies with personal finance apps that watch out for such things, helping us modify our behavior according to our?budgetary?needs.

The rise of the smartphone has ushered with it the promise of making us all a little smarter, with services like personal finance apps helping us stay on top of things. It makes us more aware of the implications of our every financial move, subliminally countering our compulsive spending behavior. ?If you know it?s bad for you, you?re not going to do it, or at least, think twice before doing so.

A study?conducted by comScore reveals that 32.5 million Americans accessed mobile banking information on their devices at the end of Q2 2011 in June. ?People are becoming more and more aware of the importance of financial management, taking advantage of tools that take on some of the responsibilities on our behalf. ?It?s a great feeling, knowing entire systems are working in the background to do some of our dirty work. ?Offloading certain tasks and aggregating important data with app services can really free us to make better decisions in the long run.

Below are some mobile personal finance apps that may be of great use in managing your finances while on the go. Before you hit that shopping mall, be sure to check out one or two of these apps to avoid spoiling your budget.

Intuit GoPayment is a free app and credit card reader for smartphones and tablets? providing easy and inexpensive way to get paid via credit card. Its credit card processing app runs across a wide variety of phones with internet access and integrates easily with mobile credit card swipers.

Pros: All in all, Intuit GoPayment is secure and easy to use. It?s great for people who just want to accept credit card payments, as well as for those running a business.

Cons: Compared to other personal finance apps, its features are a little constricted.

Mint.com Mobile Apps (iOS, Android)

Allows you to organize all your accounts, obtain financial insight, sync multiple devices, track cash spending, and review finances anywhere. This app logs transactions, and organizes budgets and spending with helpful trend charts. Mint Personal Finance will definitely help you save money.

Pros: Mint works almost autonomously, requiring very little intervention. On the whole, it?s still a cool app that?s nifty, intuitive and free.

Cons: It gives away sensitive financial info to third parties (with permission), and you can?t manually change dates on certain transactions, which may spoil your budget according to Mint graphs.

PageOnce Money & Bills (iOS, Android)

This app automatically organizes and tracks your money from banks, credit cards, bills and investment accounts in a single place. It sends out real-time alerts to remind you of bill due dates and overage charges, as well as prompts you on shady transactions. A recent update lets you pay bills directly from the app.

Pros: Allows you to track your frequent flyer miles, rewards, mobile minutes, text and data usage, simplifying your daily financial transactions.

Cons: It doesn?t have Facebook support, no open platform for third-party apps, and can?t add POP3 e-mail accounts.

Shoeboxed Receipt Tracker ?(iOS, Android)

This app provides an easy way to keep track of receipts and expenses on the go, giving you better insight of your expenditures. It also generates reports anytime, anywhere, with accuracy and fast turnaround.

Pros: The app works with the Shoeboxed mail service?just stuff receipts and business cards in a giant post-paid envelope and Shoeboxed will organize everything for you.

Cons: Unless you join the main service, you?re only allowed to send in a few receipts at a time.

Like many other personal finance apps, Wikinvest does the basics: track, analyze, and manage investments in one place. It gives a clear insight of the inflow and outflow of cash to keep your investments on budget. The app leverages Wikinvest?s proprietary brokerage import technology, boasting simple dashboards and advanced analytics. It designed mainly for users seeking investment advice. ?A recent update brings Wikinvest to iPad users.

Pros: Offers community analysis on company charts, real-time quotes, and fundamental data. As a crowd-sourced wiki, it?s got a lot of articles and details about companies that you want to know about.

Cons: Since it?s a wiki, the information about companies can be edited by anyone, making it vulnerable to spam or erroneous entries. ?But rest assured, the information is typically the same as what you?ll find on Wikia, Google Finance, Yahoo and even Wikipedia.

Conclusion

As you can see, there?s a range of personal finance apps suited for your different needs. ?When it comes to all-around management, Mint is among the most trusted brands and offers a good set of analytics to help you assess and manage all your different types of accounts, from credit cards to investments. ?Pageonce has taken a big leap forward in adding the ability to pay bills directly from the app, centralizing your action-oriented tasks into a single interface. ?Wikinvest is a niche app for investors, and has its benefits in the information it provides so you can make an educated decision.

In a reader survey, over 80% of respondents indicated that user interface was the most important factor in using a personal finance app. ?To that end, Mint still comes out on top, with Pageonce following closely behind. ?Both have been working to improve usability from an interface perspective, especially Mint, which has undergone several updates since being acquired by Intuit. ?Pageonce?similarly?has evolved a great deal over the past two years, with usability on mobile devices as a top priority.

Need a speaker? President Obama may be available (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Looking for a big-name speaker?

Now may be the time to send President Barack Obama an invitation, especially if your group represents a key political constituency.

Obama has been making the rounds of Washington's awards dinners and black-tie galas this fall, donning a tuxedo or dark suit and heading to ballrooms across the nation's capital to speak to organizations representing blacks, Hispanics, Jews, women and gays. This weekend, he adds Italian- Americans to that list.

With the 2012 campaign picking up steam and Obama struggling to recapture the enthusiasm of 2008, the president's role as headline speaker has plenty of political undertones. He needs the well-connected, politically active leaders of these groups to help him motivate their members, raise money for his re-election and get people to show up to vote in next year's election.

And the president's remarks give him a chance to address specific criticism from some supporters, and tout lesser-known administration actions that target their needs.

Since September, Obama has been the featured speaker at dinners for the Congressional Black Caucus and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, a forum on American Latino Heritage, and the annual gala for the Human Rights Campaign, a leading gay rights group. The president will speak Saturday at a black-tie dinner for the National Italian American Foundation, and in early November, at an awards dinner for the National Women's Law Center. The Union for Reform Judaism also says Obama will speak at its December conference.

Obama is following the path of many of his predecessors, who have also tried to curry favor with influential Washington-based organizations, particularly those with similar political leanings.

The president has also sent out his own invitations, bringing influential constituencies to the White House for Tribal Nations conferences, for Passover Seders, for Iftars.

With a presidential election just about a year away, the outreach to key voting blocs is more critical than ever. The president's approval ratings have dipped into the mid to low forties amid persistently high unemployment. And with sagging enthusiasm among some core supporters, Obama's campaign could face challenges in getting the first-time voters who helped him win the White House, particularly blacks, Hispanics and young people, back to the polls next November.

White House officials won't say exactly how aides decide which events the president attends. But it's little surprise that Obama rarely finds himself in front of anything less than a supportive audience.

The president often shows up just before he's scheduled to speak, and rarely stays for dinner. His speeches, sometimes delivered before a crowd of thousands, pull from his day-to-day messages on the economy and jobs, but are typically tailored to his audience.

During a fiery speech this month at the annual gala for the Human Rights Campaign, Obama heralded his role in ending the military's ban on openly gay service members and his administration's decision to stop enforcing the Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as between one man and one woman. He also used the opportunity to jab Republican presidential candidates for failing to stand up for a gay service member who was booed by an audience at a GOP debate.

"You want to be commander in chief? You can start by standing up for the men and women who wear the uniform of the United States, even when it's not politically convenient," Obama said.

Rich Galen, a Republican strategist, said Obama would be better served spending more time working with Congress to bring down the nation's 9.1 percent unemployment rate than in trying to boost his political base.

"Doing all of these things is doing nothing to foster any meaningful legislation," he said.

White House officials insist the economy, not politics is the president's primary focus. Trying to show action on the economy in any way possible, they've launched a new campaign dubbed "We Can't Wait" to highlight action the president is taking without waiting for Congress.

The White House announced two minor actions Friday, with Obama directing government agencies to shorten the time it takes for federal research to turn into commercial products in the marketplace, and calling for creation of a centralized online site for companies to easily find information on federal services

At a Congressional Hispanic Caucus dinner in September, the president touted the impact the jobs bill he had recently proposed would have for Hispanic workers. But he also took on criticism of his administration's lack of progress on immigration, saying it couldn't all fall on his shoulders.

"We live in a democracy, and at the end of the day, I can't do this all by myself under our democratic system," he said.

The president took a similar approach later that month at the Congressional Black Caucus. Aware of rumblings from some members of the group that he hadn't done enough to address unemployment among African-Americans, Obama told blacks to quit crying and complaining and "put on your marching shoes" to follow him into battle for jobs and opportunity.

The president's comments left some at the event a bit unsettled, including Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., who said she found the president's language "a bit curious."

Democratic strategist Karen Finney said it's just as important for Obama to trumpet his accomplishments when he meets with supporters as it is to acknowledge the areas where there is frustration.

"I think it takes a certain amount of courage to do that," she said. "He gets a lot of respect for showing up."

Android tablets! Daily Aspirin May Help Prevent Colon Cancer for Those at High Risk (HealthDay)

THURSDAY, Oct. 27 (HealthDay News) -- Two aspirin a day may cut the risk of colon cancer by more than half in people who are predisposed to these types of tumors, new research suggests.

And two tablets of 300 milligrams each also cut the risk of other tumors related to Lynch syndrome, a major form of hereditary colon and other cancers, according to research published in the Oct. 28 online edition of The Lancet.

People with Lynch syndrome should talk to their doctors about taking daily aspirin, keeping in mind that aspirin does have side effects, including stomach ulcers, said the study authors.

Previous research has found that otherwise healthy people who take about 75 milligrams (mg) of aspirin a day reduced not only their risk of developing colon cancer but also their chances of dying from it.

But the one in 1,000 people who have Lynch syndrome, also known as hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (or HNPCC), have a much higher risk of cancer than the general population: About half of people with these genetic abnormalities will go on to develop cancer in their 30s or 40s.

Earlier data from this trial showed no reduction in colon cancer among regular aspirin takers but that phase of the study only followed people for two years.

This part of the study, which was funded by a consortium of cancer organizations and Bayer Corporation, followed 861 carriers of Lynch syndrome for about four years.

The participants were randomized to take either 600 mg of aspirin (427 patients) in two tablets daily or a placebo (434 patients) for at least two years.

Participants were also randomized to receive a starch or a placebo. "There's evidence that people on high-carbohydrate diets have a lower incidence of colon cancer," said study lead author Dr. John Burn, professor of clinical genetics at Newcastle University in England, during a Thursday press conference.

"In people taking aspirin, there were 10 colorectal cancers versus 23 in the placebo group," Burn reported. "We reduced by 60 percent the number of colon cancers in people who actually took aspirin for two years."

The incidence of other forms of Lynch syndrome-related cancers was also reduced and the authors hope to see a reduction in non-Lynch syndrome-related cancers over the coming years.

Surprisingly, however, there was no difference in the number of polyps in the two groups, indicating that "there must be something [happening] early in the process," said Burn.

"One possibility is that [aspirin] might be enhancing programmed cell death or apoptosis in [certain] cells that will go on to become cancer," he added.

Also surprisingly, side effects from "what seems like a huge dose of aspirin," Burn said, were about equal: 11 in the treatment arm and nine in the placebo arm.

"Results of this study support aspirin use for people with Lynch syndrome, in addition to regular colonoscopies as recommended by their health care provider," said Eric Jacobs, strategic director of pharmacoepidemiology for the American Cancer Society. "However, aspirin use can have side effects and should be discussed with a health care provider."

Jacobs added that aspirin use is not presently recommended for cancer prevention alone "because even low-dose aspirin can increase the risk of serious stomach bleeding."

The next phase of the study will randomize people to receive differing doses of aspirin, from 75 mg to 600 mg, and follow them for five years.

If a lower dose proves also to be effective at lowering the incidence of colon cancer, that might reduce side effects even more, Burn said.

"This is a randomized, controlled trial so it's the best data by far you can get," said Dr. Richard Whelan, chief of colorectal surgery at St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital in New York City. "If you've been diagnosed with Lynch syndrome, you should talk to your doctor to make sure you're not at high risk for complications from aspirin such as a history of ulcers, gastritis, gastrointestinal problems," Whelan noted.

"If you are at risk, it may be possible to add preventive medicines to protect against ulcers and the like," he said. But the results "cannot be extrapolated to the general population," Whelan continued. "There the level of evidence is much lower."
